A self-taught Norwegian artist inspired by his Ethiopian heritage, Olana Janfa has had an unconventional journey into creativity. His first time painting was in 2018, after a chance meeting with a French artist in Byron Bay. Once he started to paint, Olana found that art was a perfect medium through which to reconnect with his childhood in Africa, while offering him a greater sense of home and a way to express his identity.

Since then, Olana has collaborated with international musicians, local charities and even launched a fashion collection, with his Olana X Obus collab nominated in The Design Files’ 2020 TDF + Laminex Design Awards.

Olana’s artwork is vibrant, playful and bold, often presenting a refreshing comedic social commentary. His unique approach to art and colour is influenced by traditional Ethiopian Orthodox art that surrounded him during his childhood in Addis Ababa. He also draws inspiration from sport and music — with reggae, afrobeat, and hip-hop lyrics acting as a starting point for his unique work.

I worked with Olana to create a visual identity that allows his wonderfully eccentric work to do the talking. We created custom typography using his unique handwriting, employing a palette that paired key colours from his original works. To help propel Olana’s incredible presence in the world further, I designed an animated logo, artwork catalogue, postcards, stickers, digital social assets and a website re-design that will be launching in 2021.

With great natural artistic skills comes great responsibility — and a great brand identity.
